In 2013, the SMBF and LSSM kicked off its Legacy Campaign to raise funds to pay the debt on buildings owned by each entity.  As a result of the funds raised, the Community Room at Legal Services of Southern Missouri will now become the Springfield Metropolitan Bar Community Room.

The Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association (SMBA) set the stage in 1976, for ensuring all people are created equal, when it created the Legal Aid Association of Greene County, Missouri known today as Legal Services of Southern Missouri (LSSM).  The first Board of Directors included Sam F. Hamra as President; Jeffrey H. Harrison, Vice President; The Honorable Richard E. Dorr, Secretary; and Verne C. White, Treasurer.  Other Board members were Jean Heyle, Bill Karchmer, Dennis O’Dell, Earl Scheid, Pat Walker, and Ex Officio Member Meredith B. Turner.

Over the past 40 years the SMBA and LSSM have shared joint priorities in advancing the administration of justice.  LSSM main office in Springfield, Missouri will open over 800 cases each year helping disabled children, victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking; laid-off factory workers; elderly homeowners; nursing home residents; the homeless, and other vulnerable citizens.  To ensure equal access to justice, members of the SMBA volunteer their time to help LSSM clients accepting over 100 cases per year.

LSSM provides free legal assistance to people living at or below poverty level.  The service area includes the counties of:  Barry, Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Cedar, Christian, Crawford, Dade, Dallas, Dent, Douglas, Dunklin, Gasconade, Greene, Howell, Iron, Laclede, Lawrence, Madison, Maries, Mississippi, New Madrid, Oregon, Ozark, Pemiscot, Perry, Phelps, Polk, Pulaski, Reynolds, Ripley, St. Francois, St. Genevieve, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard, Stone, Taney, Texas, Wayne, Webster and Wright.  Legal Services of Southern Missouri has offices located in Springfield, West Plains, Rolla, Charleston, and Cape Girardeau.
